Sammlung Berggruen Museum Berlin
Among Berlin's endless museums lies the wonderful Sammlung Berggruen Museum 'Picasso and His Time'. This museum showcases classic modern art on its three floors, many of which are Picasso's or were created during the time of his peak.
The museum is the namesake of Heinz Berggruen, an avid art collector who was born in Berlin in 1914, and immigrated to the USA in 1936. After the war he opened a gallery in Paris, but in 1980 decided that he would rather focus on his private collection, and gave the gallery up. He finally decided to show his collection in 1996. It was then that the Sammlung Berggruen Museum was opened in the Stuler building in Berlin, the city of his birth. The collection here is astounding, and details the life of a man who was in love with modern art, and had personal friendships with many of the artists who's works are displayed. Berggruen likes nothing more than to spend time in his gallery, and can be seen wandering around the paintings on weekends, chatting with visitors and just enjoying his life's work.
Much of the collection is concentrated on over eighty works of Picasso, which span his entire lifetime. Paul Klee's work also plays a major role in the collection, with works from 1917 to 1940 on display. Works of Cezanne, Matisse, Van Gogh and Laurens are also included.
